At the tea party demonstration in Washington, D.C., held in Lafayette Square across the street from the White House, participants said they heard about the event on the Fox News Channel. (Fox is owned by News Corp., which also owns The Wall Street Journal.)

“We’re pissed off,” said Diane McConnell, 40 years old, an anesthesiologist from Fairfax, Va., standing with her 9-year-old daughter, Madison, in matching yellow ponchos wet from the rain. She said she was motivated to attend the event because of the increased spending by the U.S. government. “If we just let it keep happening America is going to disappear.”
